Baba Ajit Singh..ਬਾਬਾ ਅਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ..बाबा अजित सिंघ

In ordinary speech the word 'Baba' means 'grandfather' or 'an old man'. Hence, on reading the heading of this true story you might be led to think that it relates to some old men. But that is not the case. When the events narrated below took place, Baba Ajit Singh was in his teen. Then, you might ask, why He is  called Baba ? The explanation is..... Among the Sikhs the word Baba is also applied to one worthy of high respect. It means 'Most Respected.' The sons of the Sikh Gurus were called 'Babas' from the very beginning of their lives. That is why the word 'Baba' is applied to the Guru Gobind Singh's sons.
Baba Ajit Singh was the eldest of the four sons of the Guru Gobind Singh. He was born at Anandpur on January 7, 1687. From his early life he was given the sort education and training that befitted the saint-soldiers of Guru Gobind Singh. He acquired wonderful proficiency in the use of weapons of war, especially the bow and the arrow. He was also an excellent swordsman. He was strong and a brave warrior. He began to take part in the Guru's wars very early in life. He performed astonishing feats of bravery on several occasions. No danger or difficulty could ever daunt him. No danger could deter him from his path of duty.
Once a Brahman came to Guru Gobind Singh's darbar. He complained that his newly-wedded wife had been taken away by force be some Pathans of Bassi, near Hoshiarpur. Baba Ajit Singh offered to help Brahman to recover his wife. With a band of young brave Sikhs, Baba Ajit Singh fell upon Bassi during the night. He arrested the Pathans responsible for the wicked deed. He recovered the Brahman's wife. He took the wicked Pathans to Anandpur the following morning. The Brahman's wife was restored to him. The wicked Pathans were punished, suitably and severely.
    Years later, Anandpur was besieged by the Mughal armies from Sarhind and Lahore. They were commanded by Nawab Wazir khan and Nawab Zabardast Khan, respectively. All the hill chiefs, who were Hindus, joined them with their armies. One day, during the siege, the two commanders of the imperial army sent a messenger to the Guru. He was told to give this message to him : 'This army is not one belonging to petty hill chiefs. It is that of the great and mighty Emperor Aurangzeb. You will not be able to oppose it for long. You should show respect to the emperor, give up fighting, and embrace Islam.' Baba Ajit Singh was standing near the Guru. The messenger's words aroused his anger. He drew his sword and said, 'Shut up. If you utter another word, I shall humble your pride. I will cut off your head from your body. I will cut you to pieces for daring to speak such insolent words before the Guru.' The messenger said nothing more. He went away, humbled and burning with rage.

    The siege of Anadpur caused great hardships to the Guru and his Sikhs. The besiegers were also getting tired. They sent message after message to the Guru. They said, 'Vacate the fort. Go where you like. We swear on the Quran and the cow that you will not be harmed.' The Guru was sure that the oaths were false. He was not in favor of placing any trust in them. But he was prevailed upon, chiefly be his mother, to vacate the fort. He did so during the night of December 20,1704. As soon as the besiegers realized this, they forgot their oaths and fell upon the Guru's party.
Baba Ajit Singh, with a party of Sikhs, held up the enemy, while the rest were crossing the river Sarsa. When all had crossed, he and his party plunged their horses into the flooded river. They soon reached the other bank. The enemy did not have the courage to jump into the fast-flowing ice-cold water of the flooded stream. After crossing the Sarsa, Guru hurried towards Chamkaur. He had only forty Sikhs with him, beside his two elder sons. The Mughal army was coming after him. He learnt that another Mughal army lay only a few miles away ahead of him. He was thus between two large armies. He decided to meet them at Chamkaur. He reached there about sunset. He occupied a mud-house or haveli, and began to wait for the enemy.
    The Mughals armies arrived during the night. They besieged the mud-house on the following day. They attacked it from all sides. They had to retreat every time after suffering heavy losses. Then they decided to force open the gate. They rushed towards it. A batch of five Sikhs went out to meet them holding their advance as long as possible. The Sikhs fought very bravely. They killed many at last they were over-powered and slain. Then another batch of five Sikhs went out to meet the enemy and check his advance. This went on for some time. The enemy suffered heavily at the hands of each batch of Sikhs. After a time, Guru Gobind Singh's eldest son, Baba Ajit Singh, asked permission to go out and oppose the enemy. He said, 'Dear father, my name is Ajit or Unconquerable. I will not be conquered. And if conquered, I will not flee or come back alive. Permit me to go, O' father. He was less than eighteen years of age. The Guru knew what the end of his son would be. But were not they who had already fallen also his sons ? He hugged and kissed Baba Ajit Singh for the last time. He then asked him him go out and seek martyrdom and life everlasting.
    Baba Ajit Singh went out. He was accompanied by five Sikhs. At first they poured a rain of arrows on the enemy. He fought like a hero. Soon his stock of arrows was exhausted. He took out his lance and sprang upon the enemy. He was wounded but he fought on as bravely as ever. Baba Ajit Singh thrust his lance into the heart of a Muhammedan soldier. The soldier wore steel armour. The lance got stuck in the armour. Baba Ajit Singh tried to pull it out. It broke in two. He drew his sword and fell upon the enemy. But he was overpowered. He fell. He was martyred.
His soul went to meet his Grandfather at the Almighty's darbar. The Guru had been watching his son from the roof of the mud-house. He had admired and rejoiced at the skill, strength, and bravery shown by his son. He had seen him wounded. He saw him fall. He thanked God that his son had met a saint-warrior's death, that he had achieved martyrdom and eternal life.

Ardaas Shakti...अरदास शक्ति ...ਅਰਦਾਸ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ .

AUKHI GHAREE NAA DEKHAN DAYEE, APNA BIRAD SAMAALE||

My daughter (S. Raghbir Singh ji's daughter) was expecting a baby. Since this was her first time, it was expected to be a painful delivery. Till nine months, my daughter’s health was normal but at end of the ninth months, her whole body swelled and became sore. Due to some other reasons too, the doctors did not think that this would be a normal delivery case.

When I told the senior doctor that for while, everything in my home had been normal and that Waheguru had never disappointed me, he started laughing, called the other doctors and said, “Look, Mr. Singh is sure that the baby will be delivered normally.” Other doctors too addressed me as Mr. Singh and told me that they too want the baby to be born by normal delivery but all circumstances are leading towards delivery through operation and that they have to be prepared for that.

When the time for delivery came, my daughter was taken to the hospital. All day she stayed in great pain and around 11pm the doctor told me that next day around 4am – 5am the baby will be born and that I should go home now.

My daughter had become very weak after enduring pain all day. She called me over and said to me that she does not have power to even do ardaas and that I should perform ardaas (prayer) for her. She said that she could sustain pain anymore and asked me to do ardaas to rid her of pain. I myself was in a state of shock and surprise over the events of the whole day. My daughter had been in pain all day and the doctors were suggesting that she would have to sustain pain all night as well. Her condition was very serious at that time.

After much persuasion by the doctors to leave for home, I left for home around 11pm, so that I may knock the door of Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji and do ardaas. Before leaving for home, I went to the labour room (where babies are delivered) and I did Ardaas and recited the following shabad with full faith:

BILAVAL MAHALLA 5 ||

TAATEE VAAO NAA LAGAYEE, PARBRAHAM SHARNAAYEE||
CHAUGIRD HAMARAI RAMKAAR, DUKH LAGAI NAA BHAAYEE|| 1 ||

SATGUR POORA BHETIYA, JIN BANAT BANAAYEE||
RAAM NAAM AUKHAD DIYA, EKA LIV LAAYEE|| RAHAO || 1 ||

RAAKH LIYE TINN RAKHANHAAR, SABH BIYAADH MITAAYEE||
KAHO NANAK KIRPA BHAYEE, PRABH BHAYE SAHAAYEE|| 2 ||

I came home while my daughter and my wife stayed at the hospital.
It took me 10 minutes to come home in my car. At 11:10pm I started doing ardaas with folded hands. I thought I will not be able to sleep,so I would spend the whole night doing ardaas and simran.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BEGINNING OF MY ARDAAS

In the beginning of my ardaas I had a very scary thought. This thought and vision had been created as a result of my faithlessness or maybe it was created as a test for me.  Maaiya(wealth) tries its best not to let one escape from its clutches. If the spiritual student stays strong and does not falter during such tests, then illusions like maaiya cannot do anything and the infinite power of Vaheguru protects the Sikh.

In the beginning of the ardaas this thought came in my mind that first of all, Waheguru in front of whom I am doing ardaas probably does not exist and even if he does exist, there is nothing he can do about it as the current situation of my daughter is the result of her bad karma from previous life.

The inner voice addressed me saying that my daughter must have done some very bad karma in her previous life and for this she will have to suffer. The thoughts came to my mind along the lines that the condition of my daughter in fact is very serious and that what the doctors are saying is truth. I am not going to get anything positive out of this ardaas.

Then the thought came to my mind that it was my duty to stick around my daughter who is at deathbed and instead of sticking around with her, I have run home to do ardaas like a coward. Instead of facing the problem, I am looking for refuge a futile thing like ardaas. After this I saw in my thoughts the dead body of my daughter and the thought came to my mind that it is futile to do ardaas for a dead body.

I FIGHT BACK THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS OF MY MIND

I was very surprised to see such attacks of my mind and got worried. After I saw the dead body of my daughter in my thoughts I cried out, “NO NO NO, this cannot happen!  I have come under his protection and he always keeps honour of the ones who come to Him. The scene and the thoughts that I had seen are all illusion.

My Waheguru is million times powerful than Maaiya the illusion. My eyes can be deceived, as what they see may be wrong. My ears can be deceived, as what they listen to could be wrong. My daughter can be deceived by illusion of maaiya. The doctors can be deceived by maaiya but I am a Sikh of Guru Arjun Dev jee and I am a Khalsa of Guru Gobind Singh jee. I cannot be deceived (dhokha) by maiya. I know that if Waheguru wants he can survive us without breathing. My daughter will surely get cured”.

After saying out all this, I extended my hazooriya towards Waheguru and said, “Sache Paatshah(True GOD), please don’t look at my weaknesses. Cure my sweet daughter. Please prove the falsehood of maaiya”.

When the above stated thoughts went across my mind, the previous scary thoughts vanished. My anxious and tired mind was filled with peace and fearlessness. In this new state of mind, I was saying:

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA
WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH ||

While sitting in this state of mind, I heard the phone ring. I picked up the phone and found out that my daughter had given birth to a baby at 11:43pm and that the birth was natural and not by operation.
Doctors were surprised at this. My daughter and her child were doing just fine.
After the phone call, I was filled with gratitude and started reciting the following pankiti of Gurbani:

VAARIYA NAA JAAVAAN IKK BAAR||
TU SADA SALAMAT NIRUNKAAR||

Gurmukh and Manmukh..

Once there were two friends, one was a Gurmukh and the other was a Manmukh.
Their friendship was deep but Gurmukh believed in God while Manmukh did
not. Gurmukh would wake up early in the morning, take a bath and recite
the holy hymns while Manmukh would still be in bed sound asleep.

Once
they were traveling through a forest. As they were passing through the
forest, Manmukh found a bag of coal. He was very happy because he could
sell it and make some money.

As they further walked while talking about
how lucky Manmukh was to find the bag of coal, Gurmukh screamed with
pain. It appeared that a splinter went in Gurmukh’s foot.

While Gurmukh was in pain,

Manmukh started
laughing. Gurmukh was surprised and asked him why was he laughing?

Manmukh said, “You have been worshipping God everyday and what you got
as a result is a splinter in your foot. I have never worshipped God and I
still got a bag full of coal.”

An
old wise man happened to be passing by when he heard Manmukh’s
comments.

The old man had a big ironic smile on his face. Manmukh was
astonished when he saw the old man smile. Manmukh asked the old man
about the reason for his smile.

The old man replied, “You are naïve. You
do not worship God. You were destined to find a bag of diamonds today
if you have been worshipping God.

And Gurmukh, you were destined to die
at the moment you got the splinter in your foot. Because you have been
worshipping God, the pain of death simply turned into a splinter.”
